We see a great number of individuals with headaches in our Burton office, and Dr. Elganainy has been able to support many of them. Actually, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 50% of all adults deal with some type of headache problem, so this really isn't surprising. One of the most typical sorts of headaches that our patients struggle with is cervicogenic headache which, thankfully, chiropractic care can usually help.
A cervicogenic headache is one that comes from a problem in the cervical spine. It could be caused by a condition with either the spine itself (primarily, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it may be because of a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This problem in your spine can cause compression or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can bring on headache discomfort.
How can you determine if the headache you are feeling is a cervicogenic headache? Aside from obtaining a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a typical symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is sometimes coupled with pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.
Seeing that cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever issue is initiating them is corrected, it is important to get treatment rather than just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an excellent solution, and one that provides a great deal of headache pain relief.
In one study circulated in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, researchers looked at 80 people who had frequent cervicogenic headaches. Half got chiropractic care and the other fifty percent engaged in light massage therapy. Each participant was assessed 12 and 24 weeks after the procedures and it was discovered that chiropractic provided the best effects.
In particular, this study found that chiropractic adjustments offered patients more significant pain relief and lowered the number of headaches that occurred. On top of that, it also diminished the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
